Tranmere Rovers are currently a
first division club based in Birkenhead on the Wirral, where they play
at Prenton Park(as seen in the pictures above). They have been in
this division since 1991 when they got promoted from the old second division
after a play-off win at Wembley over Bolton Wanderers. In recent
seasons they made the First division play-offs 3 years in a row only to
lose in the semi-finals each time. Now, however they languish in
mid-table with an ownership problem hanging over them.
A highlight from previous seasons
includes getting to the semi-finals of the Coca-Cola cup where they narrowly
lost to Aston Villa. Following a 3-1 win at Prenton Park, Tranmere
went to Villa Park on a high. However, the scoreline there also ended
3-1, this time going to Villa. The match went to penalties and then
on to sudden death. Aston Villa missed their first penalty in sudden
death, only to see Tranmere miss theirs as well. Villa then scored
and Tranmere missed, taking Villa to Wembley.
The present manager is John Aldridge
who is doing a brilliant job on limited resources. He took over from
John King, the previous manager who had signed him from Real Sociedad.
Despite
being near the releagtion places in the last 2 seasons, things have
started to improve this season and with a bit of luck maybe next
season Tranmere can start challenging for a play-off spot
again.
